How does my monthly gift benefit my sponsored child?

Global Care sponsorship focus is on empowering children and their communities through providing the basics: - Food, Health and Education.

Having our focus on these basics means that sponsorship funds are used not only for the short term benefit of the child but also the long term benefit of the child and their community.

Your sponsorship has an impact not only on the child but her or his friends, family and community.

Food

Access to a consistent source of food is difficult for some children; sponsorship funds provide a nutricous meal for not only your sponsor child but the whole school community. Funds are used also to pay for cooking and eating utensils and staff to provide meals.

As sponsorship grows we envisage a breakfast program as well at Homa Bay. We have already established an orchard and vegetable garden at Homa Bay and sponsorship will also help with the purchase of land to grow crops.

Health

Better quality of health. Sponsorship provides for medications where needed, provision of mosquito nets to assist and stopping malaria, clean water and sanitation. Sponsorship also allows for ongoing medical treatment and monitoring of child’s overall physical development. It has been Global Care’s policy to ensure access at least once every two years the children have a medical check by a qualified doctor. Good sanitation helps in stopping the spread of disease and a water supply allows for drinking, cooking and cleaning. Staff is also trained in basic first aid to help with treating the children and the wider community.

Education

Your sponsorship pays your child’s education expenses i.e. school fees, uniforms and text books. At Homa Bay your sponsored child will attend Bala Mercy Centre School. Sponsorship will also assist the school in the supply of school furniture and equipment.

Bala has established a very good name for its quality of education. Bala Mercy Centre has many committed Christian staff, who have provided for the school at their own expense, because of their love of God and the children. They are impacting the communities with very limited resources and your sponsorship will increase their effectiveness. Sponsorship will assist in providing training for the committed Global Care staff, which work and live in the child’s local community.

Long term solutions

Global Care’s focus is long term solutions to problems that have existed long term in communities. The building of schools and orphanages, provision of clean water and sanitation are all infrastructure programs that bring lasting solutions. A percentage of funds will be pooled to provide for such infrastructure solutions.

How can I make contact with my sponsor child?

You will be able to write to your child. The children love receiving your letters and learning about your family and country. Your letter may be the only personal thing that a child may possess. So be creative use nice paper, if you are good with computers scan photos of your family or areas of interest where you live. Use your imagination, if I lived in Africa what would I like to know about Australia? You can enclose stickers or bookmarks as these are convenient to mail with the letters.

If you’re adventurous you may want to come on a Global Care sponsored mission trip and visit your sponsor child. Trips are held annually and if you meet certain requirements you are warmly invited to visit Kenya and your sponsored child with Global Care.

Please don’t imply or promise anything to your sponsored child, they are happy knowing you care so don’t place yourself in a place to disappoint a child. Sponsored children are not allowed to request finances personally from you the sponsor. If this does happen please advise Global Care so we can assist you and help to rectify the problem.

Can I Give presents to my sponsored child?

Realise these children live in a world where gifts as we know it do not exist. They may get one gift in a life time and never in the grand scale that we are accustomed.

The logistics of sending gifts to your child can be difficult. You also have to consider the practicality of any gift given. As your child is part of a large group of children, one child receiving a present may leave the others feeling rejected and unloved.

Global Care has a policy of not accepting gifts for specific children. Instead, you may contribute to a gift for the whole school community, such as sporting equipment for the school, new school furniture, etc. This will be presented by Global Care Team Members on their annual mission trips.

What are some of the present achievements of Global Care in the children’s lives?

Global Care’s most visible achievement is in the children themselves. The Children’s improvement is evident by the increase in body size and muscle tone and general vitality. On going medical treatment has seen problems such as scabies limited to a few new children in the school instead of whole classes when Global Care first came to Kenya. Asthmatic children who never had access to medication now have access to those medications.

Staff at the school in Homa Bay are now able to treat basic problems straight away. Medical assessments are done on every trip and Dr. Jane Edwards who has overseen these assessments has noticed a mark increase in the children’s Health and well being.

One of the most significant infrastructure achievements to date has been provision of running water to the Bala Mercy centre at Homa Bay. This was achieved by the laying of two kilometres of pipeline from the river to two large tanks. The water is pumped to the tanks and then gravity feeds the water down to the school. Tanks and guttering have been installed on all the buildings in the school to collect rain water as well.

The supply of water ensures adequate water for the personal use of the orphans, water for a small market garden and through Global Care funds the establishment of a small orchard.

There is no electricity at the school so Global Care has purchased a solar power system that provides 240 volt power. Global Care will add to the system increasing the capacity. At present the electricity allows for the use of computers and security night lights.

With regular medical checks taking place the children’s health has markedly improved. The improvement is evident by the increase in body size and muscle tone and general vitality and general enthusiasm.

What are Global Care’s plans for the future?

The future opens many doors for Global Care Kenya. The main vision is to see the building of two new schools. One in Nairobi servicing the children in the Kibera slums, the second a new school and orphanage at Homa Bay.

With the sponsorship now set in place and gathering momentum we envisage sufficient funding to purchase land on the edge of the slums in Kibera so that we can build a school that has security of tenure providing a high quality of education to children. Homa Bay already has land but very poor facilities we plan to build whole new class rooms, dormitories, sporting and administration facilities.

You may say how can my sponsorship do all this?

Well, by the generous giving of you and other like minded people we can achieve wonderful things.

Over 200 children and their communities depend on it.
